The Rise of Guerrilla Warfare in Scotland
Wallace's guerrilla warfare tactics emerged out of necessity. Following England's usurpation of the Scottish throne, the country was plunged into chaos. Bands of robbers roamed the countryside, and assassins disguised as gentlemen threatened the peace. In this environment of general anarchy, Wallace began his public life as an outlaw, most likely after killing an Englishman. He quickly gathered a band of followers, many of whom were desperate men with nothing to lose, and initiated a series of daring raids against the English.
