The sinking of the Blanche Nef (White Ship) in 1120 is a pivotal event in British history, often overshadowed by the more dramatic battles and political machinations of the era. Yet, its impact, particularly on Scotland, was profound, reshaping the political landscape and affecting all levels of society, from the noble families to the peasant class.

The Blanche Nef disaster occurred when a vessel carrying the heir to the English throne, along with many nobles, struck a rock and sank in the English Channel. The death of William Adelin, son of King Henry I of England, led to a succession crisis known as "The Anarchy," which destabilized England for decades. This political vacuum offered both risks and opportunities that rippled north into Scotland.
