Nestled approximately seven miles southeast of Peebles, Traquair House holds the distinguished title of the oldest continually inhabited house in Scotland. While not strictly a castle, it is a fortified mansion that predates the Scottish Baronial style, possibly even influencing its development. The estate also boasts the renowned Traquair Brewery, adding a unique charm to its historical significance.

A Rich Historical Tapestry

Traquair House is steeped in history, dating back to the 12th century when it served as a hunting seat for Scottish kings. The site has seen a succession of notable figures, starting with Alexander I, who was the first Scottish king to stay and hunt at Traquair. During Alexander III's reign, the peaceful Borders region transformed as Traquair became a crucial defense point against English invasions.
